QUALITY CARE TIPS FOR YOUR RUG

    At Duane's Oriental Rug Cleaning Co. since 1926  maintaining the beauty and life of handmade rugs has been our major effort for 3 generations. Proper upkeep  depends largely on cleanliness and care. Consistent care is key in keeping them looking good for the long run.

   The fringe condition is usually a good indicator of what is going on with the rest of the rug. If fringes are soiled the rest of the rug has most likely seen the same traffic.

    Cleaning treatments like steam cleaning,lye-based soaps,chemical wash,or even some hydro-carbon based dry-cleaning methods can be too harsh for the natural fibers and vegetable dyes of oriental type rugs. The prespray chemicals used on handmade rugs before steamcleaning can fade and cause loose vegetable dyes.  Hot water and steam can shrink and fade too.

    Don't wash your handmade rug in the washing machine .Spindle washers eat holes. Tumble washer would be safer if you are determined to risk it. So if you must use cold.. gentle setting.

    Avoid the dryer. Drip dry with a fan if possible. Your much better off calling us to handle the job. We tackle tough jobs safely.(and we do have discounts availabe)

   Heavy traffic rugs need more cleaning..more often obviously.  Industry standards usually say every year you should clean them. Traffic not time is usually the factor to consider. Call us when you really need it.


    Well if your not sure the rug is ready to clean here are some industry guidlines.

1. Pick up corner of rug. Hold it .. kick it. If a cloud of dirt flies out. Get it cleaned .. Its time.

2. Kneel down on the rug. Rub it vigorously with your hand in a short arc five to ten seconds. Look at your fingers and palm.. if your hand is dirty the rug needs cleaning. (Personally I would use an old towel)    

3. With pile facing up fold part of rug back upon itself so that the pile opens along a line of knots. Look down into the base of the pile at the foundation of the rug. If the warp and weft appear dirty.. there is dirt deep down in there where a vacuum cleaner can not reach.. and of course The rug needs cleaning.

      TO PROPERLY LAY THE RUG consider the highlights or the traffic wear. FOR BEST HIGHLIGHTS viewing room from entrance the knap is smoothing away from you towards the  opposing window light. FOR TRAFFIC WEAR the practical approach says reverse the wear on those traffic patterns regardless of favorable highlights.

     Also..placing wool rugs under large unreachable items that create hard to vaccuum areas can attract moth damage and carpet beetles.. Cedar blocks and other products can help minimize the risk. Time to use narrow extension tool to vaccuum those hard to reach areas..even a broom would help disturb moth action.
